Flooding

Flooding

Due to the low radar backscatter associated with smooth water surfaces, and the high response from rough surfaces, radar imagery can easily discriminate water bodies from their surrounding environment. This is advantageous for numerous applications of water mapping including water body detection for resource management and flood monitoring. Particularly in the context of flooding, the added ability to operate during darkness and to penetrate cloud makes radar optimal for acquiring near real time data during a disaster event. The image (below) highlights areas in blue where flooding has occurred in Chile.
